Third Space Cafe

Since adjustable work-places and flexible zones are the new trend in educational and workplace design, this project was an invaluable exercise to see just how crazy I could go when set free. I was assigned the existing coffee shop on the university campus and told that the only parameters were that it had to look completely different from the current setting. I took to the project as an exercise in modular furniture, flexible uses of furniture, and evolving space. I introduced a new program and a design that responded to public performances, food/beverage, study or transit areas, and circulation. The moulded foam furniture alternates between permanent landscape features that respond to the almost living ceiling features, and colourful pieces that change with the daytime/nighttime program, another addition since the existing venue did not operate at night. The project called for attention to circulation, accessability, the specifics of running a food/beverage facility, maintainance, HVAC and lighting systems, and human ergonomics.
