Bee'ah Reclaimed Wall

This was the final project of my college experience and as such, it was the most memorable. The project was a design-build studio, the first ever in our program. The project was commissioned by the dean of our College of Architecture, Art and Design for the Dean's Suite Lobby. When our presented our proposal as a class, it was rejected. As such, we decided to go ahead and come up with a new proposal that was not as heavily reliant on the Head of Department's budget.

Partnered with Bee'ah, we were allowed to go to the local landfill and reclaim old wood. This was then designed into a series of panels with attached benches and table-tops. Our aim was to completely change the program of the existing lobby and make is representative of the users of that space and that department lobby.

The design strategy was to use lighting to create drama and intimacy. The little gaps were planned out according to a pattern, but designed to look random and freeform. The technique began with surface planing the wood and laminating the cut pieces together into panels and attached to a structural framework. Once the wall panels are attached to the benches and tables, the structure is attached to a wall-mounted support. I was in charge of engineering the lighting and making the system functional to include the LED strips and the custom-made hanging lamps.

The completed project was well-received on campus, on instagram, and design blogs. The project received an honorable mention from the Middle East AIAS in 2015 upon completion.
