Abstract Painting

This was a personal project requested by my brother. He had a canvas wall-hanging of a zebra, and over the years he grew weary of it and asked for something bright and colourful and abstract to go with his newly painted bedroom wall. The technique was to cover the original image with a layer of white and add an abstract filling until the canvas was full. At this point, I applied carefully cut and arranged patterns of masking tape and colouring the entire canvas in black. Once the black dried, the tape was ripped off, allowing the colour to pop out from under the black.

Production time: 2 days

paint and masking tape stencil
